AARON JAMES
This is to pay
tribute to my good friend Aaron James , who is presently
at the University of Brighton, and is Managing Director of NCB Radio,
He is very modest, but can be very proud of his achievements,& of all the enthusiasm & dedication he has shown. NCB Radio (from when it started as a project, as North Cornwall’s BC Radio, in March 2010) has evolved into what it is today, & that is brilliant.
Daniel Sproull is Station Manager & Rob Moore is Programme Manager.
Aaron is a great friend, & so is NCB Radio itself, & I'm glad to be able to tell you all about it here. This is just a small tribute to everything he has achieved, & to say a massive thank you. He indeed be rightly proud.

ABOUT NCB RADIO
Introduction
The team behind NCB Radio were tired. Tired of their local area being ignored in the mainstream broadcast media, coverage usually limited to the local newspapers. After all- most radio stations are based in the West of Cornwall (in all fairness, Lands End to Bude isn’t too far shy of 100 miles and is a big area to cover), and our main TV stations are based in Plymouth and Bristol. So- they decided to do something about it, and in March 2010, NCB Radio was born as a project, launching at 6pm on January 7, 2011.
Our Philosophy
We decided to create a hybrid format- that combined the music that people loved on commercial radio, and combine that with the aspects that make community radio great- giving people the chance to broadcast and being truly local to their area. We noticed a great deal of programmes on other community radio stations in the country being inconsistent with the demands of the audience and strayed into being based on the presenter’s own tastes. So we took these two aspects- and added them together forming the basis of the Brand New Sound of North Cornwall.
A Little Something for Most People
When drawing up our plans, we came up with an idea. As well as maintaining our commercial/community radio hybrid, let’s dedicate some air time to programmes that would not fit on commercial airtime. Hence, our weekday late evening schedule was born. Each night during weekdays from 9pm, as well as from 6pm Saturdays and 7pm Sundays, we gave the main playlist a rest and brought in some specialist presenters- to present genre specific shows. After all, on which other station can you find late night comedy presented by a random eccentric, movie chat and debate and Reggae followed by Northern Soul? That’s what we believe makes NCB Radio unique.
A Local Mouthpiece to our Community
Every year a great deal of great community events are organised, but where do you hear of such events apart from What’s On Guides? We wanted to be central to our community- and give airtime to such events and organisations. If there is an issue affecting the community, for example budget cuts, our listeners can count on NCB Radio to hold the correct people to account. We are unafraid of representing our local community to get the answers they desire. We also have good communication with various local councillors and our local MP Dan Rogerson, another avenue to get answers to questions.
A Place for Local Music
Right across Cornwall there are many talented unsigned bands that deserve recognition and airtime. NCB Radio gives those bands airtime, and the recognition they deserve. In addition to this we organise (and will be organising) several events showcasing local music. We have the Alive Lounge- a weekly session with local bands and musicians where they tell us their story and perform their material, and are in the process of organising a North Cornwall Battle of the Bands. In addition, we will be recording live gigs at one of North Cornwall’s premier live music venues, Shiners and inviting some of these bands onto the Alive Lounge (which is broadcast from Alive Music Record’s studios in Wadebridge, so who knows who might be listening?!)
A Local Business Haven
So- you are a local business. You could advertise on a county wide radio station, but maybe they don’t suit your target audience reach, or are too expensive for a tight budget. NCB Radio is the answer to those issues. We target an audience in North Cornwall, the target area for a lot of local businesses, and by keeping our overheads low, we can afford to do this at a great price. We don’t just sell advertising. We work directly with our sponsors to ensure the greatest reach for their product. A happy sponsor is a happy radio station. We are not for profit- so our main concern is breaking even- any surplus monies are invested into local causes and campaigns.
Lovers of Charitable & Community Causes
NCB Radio loves its community- and recognises the good work charities and community organisations do.That’s why we allow them airtime for FREE, and also work directly with them to see what NCB Radio can do to help whether it be organising a fundraiser or promoting their cause.
Local People- working for the community at a truly Local community radio station. We are NCB Radio.

A look back at the archives of NCB Radio (Please be aware it was formerly known as North Cornwall's BC Radio)
Register of Companies. (August 2012)This piece of paper has made my day. We've worked for 19 months to get to this position, and I am so thankful to The Ark, Live Unltd and Sproull Solicitors- if it wasn't for those three companies, NCB Radio wouldn't exist anymore. I am one proud Managing Director.
(Aaron James)
It’s tradition at this time of year
to send goodwill messages and cards etc…
so here’s part one of it!
NCB 2011 has been an adventure, and indeed a learning curve for myself and everyone involved. When we started on a cold Friday night in January 2011, there was only a handful of us. But over the year new faces have joined, one or two have left, and as I look forward to NCB 2012, it shows how far we’ve come.
Okay so we’re not Pirate FM in audience reach or indeed budget, but what we are doing that will come into fruition next year is something we are all passionate about- a community radio station that is passionate, knowledgeable and entertaining to the area we live in.
So…watch this space.
In the meantime though, I’d like to say a huge, personal thanks to the many fantastic individuals and entities that have shared our vision and rode through what has been at times, a rather tough year. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. (planning permission takes longer than that, right? ).
I’d like to start off with an individual that first came across NCB online- David Ryder. Dave despite not being remotely local, saw what we were trying to do and over the year has become a friend of the team. He is hugely respected by everyone here at NCB, and we only wish you were down here to be part of us!!
Secondly, to Daniel Mitchell at Evolve. Evolve came on board the NCB radiotrain back in May 2010, when we were just an idea. Their input ensured we could tackle Royal Cornwall 2010, which was a crucial assessment for us on what capability we had to live broadcast. Since then, Evolve have provided us with fantastic, second to none support on any technical gremlins we have had.
Over this year, we’ve formed some brilliant links with some truly innovative individuals and businesses. I’d like to give a shout to Shirlee Aldridge and Julia Stock at Celtic Driving School, Jacob Blow at Magical Magia, Angie Bolton at George & Dragon, David Gill at Shiners, Oscar Morse & Emma Wherry at Cornish Guardian, Daniel Kobale at Alive Music Studios, Matthew Penhaligon at The Cornish Arms, James Martin at Pirate FM, and a personal thanks to Deborah Kessler, Cy Parry and Pam & Michael Stevens for their help this year.
Over this year also, I have come across many zany individuals when broadcasting on air, none more so than a Twitter mob known as Fake F1. They’ve been a great help in not only bringing chaos to my shows once a month with a rather “eclectic” choice in music requests, but also in helping us expand our Motorsport content presence online.
And finally….a HUGE HUGE thanks to Colin Martin, Kate Martin, Pete Garcia and Laura Garcia at The Ark Cornwall. Since NCB and the Ark started working together, things have changed so much here, and all for the better. Thank you so much guys- I look forward to a great future.

NCB Radio: Six Months on air
At 6.00pm (GMT) on Friday 7th
January, 2011, NCB Radio came on to the air. This was after plenty of
dedicated preparation and hard work by Aaron James & his team, and 7th July
2011, celebrated exactly 6 months on the air. Station & Programme Manager
Aaron James said on the station's Facebook page "Myself and my team have shared
an incredible adventure in those six months, and a lot of it is thanks to you
guys our supporters and listeners".
Two months after launching, NCB Radio welcomes two new sponsors
NCB Radio today
welcomes Alive Music Studios and Open Telecom International on board as our two newest sponsors alongside our
existing (and long serving) sponsor Evolve Bodmin.
As well as sponsorship, this new agreement sees the Brand New Sound of North Cornwall enter into a strategic alliance with Alive.
This entails the following : All new music produced by Alive’s record label Alive Music Records will be played exclusively on NCB Radio (on a community radio level), eight weeks before the song goes on sale to the public. In addition there will be programming alliances- an announcement will be made shortly on a brand new show being launched in conjunction with Alive as well as a multitude of other features both on and off air.
Aaron James, Station Manager commented “To say we are delighted to welcome both Alive and Open Telecom on board is an understatement. Not only is this an announcement that helps ensure NCB Radio is around for a long time yet, but using Alive’s facilities and talent base, we can ensure that North Cornwall gets the hottest, locally produced music and some absolutely brilliant programming over the coming months. I would like to say a huge thanks to our resident movie boffin Jonny Bryant for his assistance in making this possible, as well as Dan Kobale for his support by backing us as a project. At this point let’s also not forget Evolve Bodmin our other sponsors without whom we may not be here at all.”

# Licencing cost permitting,
North Cornwall's BC Radio is to launch its first trial broadcast at this years
Royal Cornwall Show.
# There are exciting times ahead for North Cornwall's BC Radio, with new website and graphics package imminent. An application for funding has gone in to buy some super spec studio equipment (ably advised by Dave Gould, our Head of Music, Management advisor etc).
